Rearing layers has become a prominent venture in the Nigerian poultry farming industry. These female chickens are prized for their egg-laying capabilities, making them a profitable choice for many livestock farmers. For beginners, however, estimating the cost of rearing a flock of 100 layers can be a bit challenging. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the expenses involved in raising 100 layers in Nigeria.

    1. Building a Poultry House

Setting up a suitable habitat is crucial when it comes to raising layer chickens. Given their delicate nature, providing them with a well-ventilated and secure space is essential. Opting for a battery cage is advised as it is considered the best housing option for layers. The cost of the poultry house depends on factors like location, materials, and design preferences, making it difficult to provide an exact figure.

    1. Acquiring 1-day old Layer Chicks

The price of day-old layer chicks can vary due to market fluctuations and the quantity purchased. On average, a single day-old layer chick may range from N500 to N700. For the purpose of this article, let’s assume the cost is N500 per chick. Thus, acquiring a hundred layer chicks would amount to approximately N50,000. It’s advisable to budget slightly higher due to potential market price fluctuations.

    1. Vaccination and Medication

Vaccination and medication are crucial components of rearing healthy layer chicks. Preventing common diseases like Newcastle disease is of utmost importance. Consulting a veterinarian for guidance on proper vaccination protocols is recommended.

    1. Feeding the Chicks

Unlike broilers, layer chickens consume less feed. Approximately 1.5 kg of feed per chick should suffice for the first month. This amounts to 150 kg of feed for 100 layers. In the subsequent month, the feeding rate may increase to 1.8 kg per chick, necessitating an additional 180 kg of feed. This totals to 330 kg of feed for the first two months.

Considering the market prices, a bag of feed for layers typically ranges from N6,000 to N8,000. Assuming an average of N6,000 per bag, the estimated cost for 14 bags of feed is between N84,000 and N112,000.

    Conclusion

Rearing 100 layers in Nigeria involves several considerations, including building a suitable poultry house, acquiring day-old layer chicks, vaccination, and providing proper nutrition. While costs may vary based on factors like location and market fluctuations, this article provides a rough estimate to give aspiring poultry farmers an idea of what to expect.
